Drawing for Myself – Two-Bad

Been super busy with the Kids Read Comics Super Fun Tour, but I managed to sneak in an hour to draw for myself, and to get back to those Masters of the Universe character re-imaginings! Time for another bad guy: Two-Bad!

TWO-BAD Pencil, brush pen, and Photoshop on 8.5×11″ bristol.

This one I’d play as a straight-up thug. Maybe a little “mafia enforcer”, but with the personality of two bickering brothers. Like Pesto and Bobby, the Goodfeathers! That might be fun.

Hope to get back on the horse with these this week. Got lots of characters yet to finish!

Thunder Punch Daily 105 – It’s Natural, Not a Syndrome!

Today I share some thoughts from the car as I wrestle with a comment reportedly made by a well-known comics personality on the “Manga Syndrome” and beginning artists who ape the style of others. I get a little angry in this one as I talk about why I think we should talk about what works communicate rather than focusing on their style or intended audience.

Drawing for Myself – Turbo

Had a full day of freelancing today, so I thought I’d reward myself by sketching some Go-Bots again! After all, as I finished my last piece, I heard Arthur Burghardt’s voice say to me “Time to go!”

I still very much want to get this series on DVD. Please make it happen, Warner Brothers and Hasbro!

Drawing for Myself – Ram Man

And now for one of my favorite Masters of the Universe characters of all time:

Like many of the heroes, I wouldn’t do much to re-imagine him. I adore the Filmation Ram Man, so I’d play him pretty much the same way. Cheerful, good natured, but a bit slow. There’s something great about a character like this in the middle of a really frightening scene.

Process note for this one: I tried out exploring the re-design by sketching in Sketchbook Pro on an iPad with the BoxWave Stylus. Aside from some interface stumbling (it’s weird to not have all of my tool palettes open at once, but I quickly learned how to cope), it was super fun and intuitive as a loose sketching tool. See below.

Drawing for Myself – Tri-Klops

New bad guy in the series of Masters of the Universe re-imaginings!

I did like what the 2002 Mike Young series did with the character. They essentially turned him into Skeletor’s chief science officer, and he had a “creepy inventor” vibe to him. But like a lot of villains in that series, I don’t feel like they played him loud enough. In my imaginary rebooting of the He-Man series, Tri-Klops would have his own secret agenda to capture Castle Grayskull’s Secrets through his technology. What does he want with it? Something seriously creepy. Not power for himself, but to distort and corrupt the power of the Secrets into a new form. Something happened between him and those Elders that twisted him up in a bad way, so now all he wants is to ruin whatever is left of them. He still plays the role of Skeletor’s science officer, but only up until he sees an opportunity to capture the Secrets himself. This presents some neat opportunities for multi-faction battles in the series.

(An astute reader will no doubt pick up that I’m borrowing a bit from the Beast Wars character Tarantulas for this re-imagining. If you’re going to steal, steal from the best!)

Drawing for Myself – Man-At-Arms

Back on track with the Masters of the Universe character re-imaginings! Another good guy this time:

MAN-AT-ARMS Pencil, brush pen, and photoshop on 5.5×8.25″ bristol.

So some folks have been joking around about starting a campaign to petition one of the smaller comics companies (such as IDW) to get the license to the MotU series and put me on as the series creator. Let me tell you this: If I ever got a gig drawing He-Man comics for kids, you can bet I’d put everything I have into it. This would truly be a passion project for me.

Who knows, after I finish all of the main characters, I might have something to show a company. But there are too many cooks in this particular kitchen to give me any hope of doing the comic, much less doing it my way.

So I’ll just get back to having fun with these designs.

Another in the series of Masters of the Universe re-imaginings, pretending that I’m rebooting the series as a cartoon/comic aimed at kids!

EVIL-LYN Pencil, brush pen, and Photoshop on 5.5×8.25″ bristol.

(and yes, I intentionally put her in the same pose as the Teela re-imagining)
