Drawing for Myself – Fisto

As I move down the line of characters from the Masters of the Universe series, re-imagining them as if I were in charge of re-launching the franchise and aiming it squarely at kids again, I’m trying to watch for any shape or size considerations when interpreting the character.

When it came to Fisto, one of my favorite figures (still have mine!), I asked myself what I thought of the character before I ever saw him in the Filmation cartoon, then try to flip that assumption in a slightly different direction. I remember thinking that he must be some kind of Knight of Eternia. Noble, brave, a little wiser than the other soldiers.

Looking at the figure again and channeling my inner 8-year-old, I thought Fisto was an ideal candidate to be the boisterous party animal of Eternia. Still very brave and strong, but also loud and cheerful. I’m thinking of him as somewhere between Tom Bombadil and Volstagg. He has a boundless optimism, he loves a good joke, and especially a good meal. The only thing he hates is bullies.

I think I like him even more, now!

I really don’t like using LOL, but I just LOLed at this one. Super fun design. Wasn’t expecting that at all. The Manga influence is definitely apparent in this one. Nice work.
