If you have an interest in storytelling and cartooning, and especially if you’re a fan of books like Diary of a Wimpy Kid, I hope you will mark 1 pm Saturday, February 5 on your calendar, because Ruth Barshaw, the author of the popular Ellie McDoodle books will be leading a 90-minute workshop at the Chelsea District Library!

You will learn how to use a journal to document your life experiences in what some call a “hybrid style” of storytelling, that is neither pure prose nor comics, but uses the affordances of both. By the end you will have brainstormed, observed, and documented a few things in your own hybrid journal! You can bring your Ellie McDoodle books to be signed after the event, or purchase new copies during the signing.

I met Ruth at a Teachers Appreciation event in Lansing last year, and saw first-hand what her workshops look like. It’s a lot of fun to watch her open up her thinking process on how she keeps cartoonist journals. Some things are captured in images, others are taken down in words. I did a little presentation on comics at the same event, and Ruth, ever documenting her experiences in her journals, made an entry on my performance!

Registration is required, and seats are filling up, so sign up now!

This workshop is funded by the grant supporting my role as Artist in Residence for the Chelsea District Library and the Chelsea Center for the Arts.
