The Comics Industry has many discrete worlds, so what are you gonna do about it?

A really fun and relaxed discussion with +Dave Roman on the latest episode of the Stuff Said podcast. Tons of great stuff nested in this casual conversation about Dave's career, but one of my big takeaways was something that Dave and I have argued about in past +Comics Are Great! shows (particularly this one: http://comicsaregreat.com/audio/cag50.mp3): namely, that though we like to say "it's all just comics why can't we get along", there are a bunch of distinct subcultures (of readers and creators) within the medium/industry that may never acknowledge one another. (paraphrasing here, that may not be exactly how Dave meant it)

But as Dave said, no one goes into Barnes & Noble and says "It's all just books!" Instead they say "Where are the [insert your genre/topic here] books?" And though there are some book enthusiasts who do say the former, they are vastly outnumbered by the folks who just want the thing they are interested in.

Whether or not this is a good thing, it does emphasize the importance of knowing who your intended audience is so you can properly position your work. And this is no easy quest–like Dave, I've struggled through trial and error to find the place where my readers live.

But even beyond that one bit, it's great listening for anyone interested in cartooning and comics.
