Drawing for Myself – Redesigning Trap Jaw

So the other night I was introduced to the new My Little Pony cartoon (thanks, Kasey!). I was blown away by the show. The designs are fresh and modern, yet they keep what made the franchise fun in the first place. In a lot of ways it does for the Pony franchise what Transformers: Animated did for the Transformers franchise.
So when I sat down to do a warm-up sketch today, I thought I’d try something I often hesitate to do: re-imagine the character somewhat. In this case, I didn’t reinvent character design, though I did try to reinterpret him in a cartooning style I’ve been playing around a lot with lately.
TRAP JAW Pencil, brush pen, and Photoshop on 5.5×8.25″ bristol.
This was fun to do. I may try this with more 80s cartoon characters.
