Comics Class for Grown-Ups!

I’m very excited to announce that I’ll be leading a comics workshops for adults at the University of Michigan Museum of Art this June!

The Ann Arbor Art Center partners with UMMA to lead special workshops for the Ann Arbor area, and my Write With Images workshop was selected for the next round of available events.

Here’s the workshop description:

Learn how a cartoonist uses drawings, panel size, and crazy sound effects to immerse their readers in the story! Cartoonist Jerzy Drozd will lead you in an interactive discussion on some of the fundamental comics storytelling principles, after which you’ll be invited to create a short comics story of your own!

Even if you’ve never drawn a stick figure before, this class will have something to offer you. The focus of my Write With Images workshop is on how size relationships and types of line serve to communicate story in comics. Comics is telling a story with images, regardless of the “quality” of the images. If you can understand the differences between big and small, course and smooth, and pointy and round, you can make a comic.

You can sign up on the Ann Arbor Art Center website.

Wondering what to expect? Check out this episode from my Comics Fundamentals class for adults held at the Ann Arbor District Library last year!

I’m thrilled about leading more comics courses for adults, and I hope to fill this class up. You can help make this happen by spreading the word!

  1. Move to Connecticut for a month or so and do some classes here. Please? 🙂

I’d be happy to visit Connecticut to lead some classes! Check with your local libraries or art centers to see if they’ll have me. These places won’t provide this content unless they know there’s a demand.
