Drawing for Myself – Webstor

Stole some time today to add another to the growing list of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe character re-imaginings!
Recognizing the shortcomings of the original design (a “spider” character with only two arms and legs), I certainly wanted to move him farther away from a human and more towards a spider appearance. And while I love the 2002-era re-design, I thought it could go even more “spidery”. Spiders creep most of us out, and these guys are mystical monsters. But we can’t go totally Shelob on him, because a vital key to the MoTU franchise, as I see it, is the bad guys are just as fun as the good guys. So I think I landed in a middle ground I’m happy with.
Past re-imaginings:
- Moss Man
- Two-Bad
- Ram Man
- Tri-Klops
- Man-At-Arms
- Evil-Lyn
- Man-E-Faces
- Adam & Cringer
- Beast Man
- Stratos
- Buzz-Off
- Whiplash
- Teela
- Mer-Man
- He-Man
- Trap Jaw
Cool, but it looks nothing like Emmaunel Lewis. No, wait, wrong Webster. 🙂
I think that you pulled off this one magnificently. He’s more intimidating, but still fun. He definitely has a “cute intimidation” to his design.
One of my favorites so far. (On a side note, when I can get the money I really want to buy the ink sketch of Webstor that you had up on GO GO Illustration, if it’s still available that is.)
I still have the Webstor sketch I think you’re talking about: http://gogoillustration.tumblr.com/post/380367802/webstor01
And thanks for the kind words on this one! It’s a fine balance trying to create likable yet monstrous characters. 🙂
